Making the switch to toxin-free personal and home care products
Toxin Free Health & Home
RELIABLE RESOURCES
There is so much information online about harmful ingredients that can be found in your skin care, and household cleaning products. It can be challenging to sift through the information and know who to trust! My favourite resource is Environmental Working Group (EWG) website and app! Use their Skin Deep search engine to determine the safety level of the products you have in your home right now. Let EWG help you decide if what you are currently using is safe, or if it is time to make the switch to safer products for you, your family, and the planet!
GRADUAL SWITCH
Once you realize you have some products that you want to switch to more natural and toxin-free options, it can be hard to know where to start. The best strategy is to wait until you run out of a cosmetic, or cleaning product and then replace it with a natural alternative. Whether you are revamping your makeup bag or your whole home it can be overwhelming and expensive to make the transition overnight. Best to make the switch bit by bit.
The next time you run out of plastic wrap purchase bees wax food wrappers instead. When you run out of ziplock bags purchase reusable silicone zip bags instead. When you need to go to the drugstore to replace your deodorant, stop and consider getting one without fragrance, aluminum and parabens. Switch the brand of your blush and bronzer so that you are not putting formaldehyde, lead and phthalates on your face every morning. I think you get the idea!
PRIORITIZE
This switch can be daunting even when implemented gradually, so it is important to prioritize the most important things to switch. Begin by swapping the products that go in and on your body first. Tampons, sanitary napkins, toothpaste, lipstick, lip chap, face cleanser, face cream, shampoo and conditioner and so on. Then move on to things that you touch regularly and could end up ingested indirectly, for example, cleaning solutions used on your cooking surfaces, floor cleaner, dish soap, and laundry soap. Whatever you are using on a daily basis has a greater potential for causing toxic build up in your body, so make changing those products your priority.
ACCESS
Ok, so you have decided to make the switch! But you need to know where you can purchase these natural brands. Keep it simple, first check out your local grocery stores & markets @donaldsmarketcommercial @choices_markets @wholefoodsbc. For household and body care products, I shop from @welldotca and filter by Green & Natural or on @amazon using the EWG Verified Products filter so that I am only shopping for personal care products that are safe for me and my family. For makeup I shop @beautycounter & @sephora and filter by Clean at Sephora to get the best non-toxic beauty.
